How to Play Roblox — Complete Beginner's Guide

If you've never touched Roblox before, this guide takes you from install to first real game in under an hour — plus the safety settings every new player (or parent) should turn on before they log in.

7-step setup

  1. 01

    Install Roblox on your device

Roblox is free on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Xbox, Meta Quest, and PlayStation. On PC, download the installer from roblox.com — never from third-party sites or 'free Robux' links. On mobile, use only the official App Store / Google Play listing.

  2. 02

    Create a safe account

Use an email you actually own and pick a username that doesn't reveal your real name, school, or age. Set your birthdate honestly — Roblox uses it to enable extra safety controls for under-13 accounts (filtered chat, restricted experiences).

  3. 03

    Turn on 2-step verification

Go to Settings → Account Info → Add Email + Verify, then Settings → Security → 2-Step Verification. This blocks the number-one way accounts get 'beamed' (stolen). Never enter your password on any site that isn't roblox.com.

  4. 04

    Learn the interface

The home tab surfaces games; the discover tab shows curated categories and charts; the avatar tab is where you dress your character; the Robux menu shows your balance. Chat is opt-in — you can disable it entirely for younger players in Settings → Privacy.

  5. 05

    Pick your first game

New players should start with a game that has clear objectives and a low skill floor: Blox Fruits for anime-style combat, Adopt Me for social/pet trading, Blade Ball for reflex duels, or Pet Sim 99 for cozy grind. Play one game seriously for a week before jumping to the next.

  6. 06

    Understand Robux and gamepasses

Robux is the in-app currency for avatar items and premium features. Kids should not have a payment method on the account — parents can top up with gift cards from major retailers. Never trade Robux outside the platform; every off-platform 'trade' is a scam.

  7. 07

    Follow parental / safety settings

For under-13 accounts, enable a Parental PIN (Settings → Parental Controls) and set a monthly spend limit. Chat, direct messages, and 'who can invite me to servers' can all be locked to Friends Only or No One.

Frequently asked questions

Is Roblox free to play?

Yes. The Roblox platform and the vast majority of games on it are free. Robux (the in-game currency) is only needed for avatar items and optional gamepasses.

What age is Roblox for?

Roblox is rated for ages 10+, but has strong parental controls that make it safe for younger kids when configured. Under-13 accounts get filtered chat and restricted experiences by default.

Do I need a powerful computer?

No. Roblox runs on almost any modern phone, tablet, or laptop. If you're on older hardware, lower Graphics Quality to 1 in the in-game menu for a smoother experience.

How do I get free Robux?

The only legitimate ways: Microsoft Rewards, occasional Roblox promo codes (from Roblox itself), or by publishing your own games. Any site or Discord user offering 'free Robux' is trying to steal your account.
